HP Large Format Empowers AEC and Design Professionals to Work Smarter, Faster

by Mark Vruno

Press release from the issuing company:

HP has launched the new HP DesignJet T870 printer, expanded HP Build Workspace with mobile-enabled scanning and AI-powered vectorization, and unveiled HP SitePrint SMR prism, a new precision accessory for HP SitePrint. These innovations help professionals in architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) connect physical and digital workflows with ease. By addressing common barriers – from tight deadlines to limited space and dispersed teams – they enable faster delivery, sharper results and more seamless collaboration. At the same time, the versatility of the new HP DesignJet T870 also extends beyond AEC into sectors such as retail and education, where hybrid teams need compact, sustainable devices that can support diverse applications, while fitting into modern work environments.

AEC professionals have always built the future, but today, creativity is too often slowed by barriers, bureaucracy, and disconnected workflows. The world has changed, and so should the way they build and work. HP is fast-forwarding the industry into a new era where workflows, teams, and ideas move seamlessly from physical to digital, from vision to reality. Powered by HP’s integrated, high-performance technology ecosystem, HP DesignJet printers, HP Build Workspace software, HP Z Workstations, and HP SitePrint, every tool and every team work together, eliminating workflow gaps and ensuring accuracy at every stage. HP’s new campaign opens the way to this transformation, promising to revolutionize the way AEC professionals design, collaborate, and construct.

“At HP, we are committed to helping professionals work smarter and faster through secure, sustainable printing and AI-powered design workflows,” said Daniel Martinez, SVP and division president, HP Large Format Printing. “Today’s announcements transform how teams in diverse industries collaborate across offices, studios and worksites, freeing them to focus on what matters most – designing and building the world around us.”

HP DesignJet T870

New HP DesignJet T870 Printer

The HP DesignJet T870 has been engineered as a compact 24-inch printer tailored to the needs of today’s hybrid workspaces. Professionals in AEC, education and retail sectors, particularly within small and medium-sized businesses, often rely on a single device to manage a wide variety of outputs, which is easy to operate and seamlessly integrates into their existing workflows. With the HP DesignJet T870, HP is delivering a compact, versatile printer that combines high-quality output with sustainable design and seamless integration into hybrid workspaces. The new printer is up to 30% lighter, quieter and more energy efficient 2. Built with versatility in mind, the HP DesignJet T870 offers the world’s easiest multi-size printing experience1 for precise CAD drawings as well as vibrant educational visuals and retail signage.

The HP DesignJet T870 Printer features pigment-based HP Flex Tech Inks to produce high-quality prints across various sizes.  Its integrated input tray enables seamless multi-size printing – from A4/A to A1/D – without the need to manually switch between roll and sheet media. With the ability to deliver A1/D prints in as little as 21 seconds3, it ensures fast turnaround even during tight deadlines. Additionally, the printer minimizes workflow disruption thanks to high capacity 130ml and 300ml ink cartridges, which reduces the frequency of replacements.

With HP Click Solutions4, including the HP Click App and HP Click Driver, users enjoy real-print previews and automatic error detection, streamlining the printing process from job submission to collection. And with HP Wolf Security baked in, the HP DesignJet T870 safeguards against cybersecurity threats, giving professionals the confidence to work securely in hybrid environments.

Sustainability is engineered into every stage of the HP DesignJet T870 lifecycle. The device contains at least 45% recycled plastic and 10% recycled metal5 and ships in 100% polystyrene free packaging 6. Day to day, automatic on/off scheduling can trim energy use by up to 60%7, while optimized maintenance cuts ink consumption by as much as 95%8 during printhead cleaning. This results in powerful printing that never compromises workspace comfort, quality, sustainability or ease of use.

“For us, the HP DesignJet T870 stands out for its versatility”, said Manel Peribañez, director at BCQ Arquitectura. “The ability to load A3 pages separately from the roll and switch between them effortlessly—without even having to stand up—is a significant benefit. We simply handle the printing, and that’s all. This feature has been immensely valuable to us. Additionally, thanks to the HP Click experience, we have significantly reduced errors, which is something we highly appreciate.”

HP Build Workspace with Mobile Scanning and AI Vectorization

Originally announced in September 2024, with AI vectorization available in selected countries since May 2025, HP Build Workspace is now being expanded with new features, bringing mobile-enabled scanning and AI-powered vectorization directly from HP DesignJet MFPs (Multifunction Printers). With this expansion, HP is seamlessly bridging the gap between physical and digital workflows, enabling professionals to convert legacy drawings and field sketches into CAD-ready files quickly and accurately, reducing project delays, along with enhancing collaboration across distributed teams, and reinforcing data security in increasingly hybrid work environments. Through HP Click Solutions integration, professionals can also seamlessly print documents from HP Build Workspace directly to HP DesignJet printers, ensuring a smoother end-to-end workflow from digital design to physical output.

By reducing manual drafting time by up to 80%9, AI vectorization accelerates workflows and frees up resources for higher-value tasks. The platform also improves collaboration through integrated layer separation, markup tools and centralized file sharing. By combining scanning, vectorization and printing in one streamlined process, HP Build Workspace ensures teams can work more efficiently across dispersed project sites, minimizing delays and enhancing accuracy.

Additionally, coming in 2026, HP Z Workstations users will be able to run AI vectorization jobs locally and complete them up to 2x faster than with cloud-based workflows10.

HP SitePrint SMR prism: Unlocking Next-Level Precision for Construction Layouts

In today’s fast-paced construction environment, precision and efficiency are more critical than ever. As projects grow in complexity and timelines tighten, the need for reliable, high-performance layout tools becomes paramount.

Recognizing this demand, HP is introducing the new HP SitePrint SMR prism, a detachable accessory that brings next-level precision to construction layout while reducing manual rework. The prism automatically rotates to maintain optimal alignment with total stations, ensuring layout accuracy of up to +/- 2mm (1/16 inch) and floor deviation marking precision down to +/- 0.8mm. Delivering greater speed and precision, HP SitePrint SMR supports on-time project delivery and more reliable layout execution, empowering construction teams to confidently take on projects with the highest accuracy requirements.

Looking ahead, HP is also set to broaden its floor deviation marking services to support new applications such as interior finishing, reinforcing the company’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of innovation in construction workflows.
