Japanese Big Six Manufacturers Prioritize Smart Office Technology &

Production Print Capabilities

Access Japan 2018 Outlines Future Trends in Business Technology Industry

August 21, 2018 (Hamburg, NJ) — With the Japanese Big Six manufacturers—Konica Minolta, Canon, Ricoh, Toshiba TEC, Sharp, and Kyocera—focused on creating solutions to improve office and workflow efficiency, The Cannata Report provides intelligence on a number of associated future trends in the business technology industry in Access Japan 2018, a special summer 2018 bonus issue sponsored exclusively by GreatAmerica Financial Services.

In meetings with leading executives at the Japanese Big Six conducted in Japan in May of 2018, The Cannata Report’s editorial team confirmed that each manufacturer recognizes the business of traditional document printing is contracting and each is innovating aggressively to compensate for that decline. Access Japan 2018 reports that two priorities of the manufacturers’ are to develop and scale 1) the “smart office” and office output efficiency, and 2) production/high-end print capabilities.

Additional business technology trends identified by The Cannata Report’s Access Japan 2018 include:

  • Emphasis on R&D will be with inkjet technology as opposed to conventional toner. While the current emphasis on inkjet is in wide and large format, that technology will be moved downstream to provide highly competitive products to be employed in the office.

  • The manufacturers recognize MFP needs to evolve in a major way to remain relevant. Each is working to develop technologies to make their MFP products more efficient and productive and to further differentiate their products from competitors.

  • Most of the manufacturers are planning to leverage data through the MFP and other smart devices to improve business processes. The emphasis on big data and IT-related services and connectivity was notable.

  • All manufacturers interviewed are looking to firmly establish themselves in the top three in market share.

Access Japan 2018 reports on meetings with top global industry executives including, Shoei Yamana, president and CEO, Konica Minolta, Inc.; Yoshinori Ikeda, advisory director, deputy chief executive, Office Imaging Products Operations, Canon, Inc.; Hede Nonaka, corporate SVP and GM, Visual Communication Business Group, Ricoh; Sachio Koyama, vice president, general manager of products, marketing & service division, Toshiba TEC Corporation; Fujikazu Nakayama, senior executive managing officer – president & CEO, Sharp Marketing Japan Corporation; and Norihiko Ina, president, Kyocera Document Solutions Corporation.

The Cannata Report Salutes 2018 Women Influencers

Mary Jo Johnson of EO Johnson, Ragni Mehta of Xerox, & Anneliese Olson of HP

Largest Issue Ever in History of Leading Business Publication

July 20, 2018 (Hamburg, NJ) – The Cannata Report, the leading intelligence resource for business technology and imaging solutions resellers, features EO Johnson’s Mary Jo Johnson, Xerox’s Ragni Mehta, and HP’s Anneliese Olson on the cover of its 2018 Women Influencers issue (July/August 2018), the largest issue in the publication’s history.

“We are especially proud that our 2018 Women Influencers issue is our personal best,” said CJ Cannata, EVP and publisher. “We are committed to showcase the diversity of talent in the business technology industry and are thrilled that our Women Influencers franchise has been so well received by the industry and supported by a record number of advertising partners as it continues to grow and expand. Its success speaks volumes about the contributions women make in this industry.”

The Cannata Report’s Women Influencers editorial franchise, presented by AMETEK ESP, is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year. A brunch saluting the 2018 Women Influencers will be held November 9 in conjunction with The Cannata Report‘s 33rd Annual Awards & Charities Dinner.

“It is our pleasure to serve as the exclusive sponsor of The Cannata Report’s Women Influencers franchise,” Dave Perrotta, business unit manager, AMETEK ESP. “We share The Cannata Report’s passion to promote the many talented women in our industry whose achievements are immeasurable. These standout executives serve as role models for all women, no matter what business or industry.”

In the cover story of the summer double issue, Johnson, the first dealership executive honored as a Women Influencer, along with Mehta and Olson, share their similar beliefs regarding the power of diversity and discuss how it stokes creativity and drives innovation. In addition, each executive opens up about their unique career paths and provides insight into their leadership positions.

Mary Jo Johnson, CEO and owner, EO Johnson Business Technologies

Johnson’s guiding principle is simple: lead as a servant. Since taking over her father’s business in 1999, Johnson has leaned on this core value to help her not only continue her father’s legacy but also create one of her own by growing EO Johnson and establishing the dealership as one of most forward-thinking in the office technology industry, offering managed print services, production print services, document management and IT services. “We have been able to augment our print businesses with these other solutions that customers were either asking for or didn’t know they needed but they knew they had these pain points, and we knew we had a solution.” Says Johnson, “Diversity drives innovation,” adding, “We have all these different minds, different experiences. When you get a diverse population, you can drive more creativity when you work as a team.”

Ragni Mehta, VP and general manager, cut-sheet business, Xerox

For Mehta, evolution defines her nearly three-decade career at Xerox. In her current role, she focuses on the high-end production space, managing the overall lifecycle of cut-sheet products. She and her team work to identify product strategy, opportunities in the market, setting goals and objectives to identify what those offerings should be. “In a mature market, over time in order to be successful, we really need to be thinking beyond the box itself to really help customers solve problems,” she said. “We need to think about things from an end-to-end application perspective.”

Anneliese Olson, VP and general manager, home print solutions, HP Inc.

Olson has spent her nearly 25-year career at HP traveling the world, helping the company drive its transformation in the technology market. Living and working across countries has reinforced Olson’s conviction in HP’s efforts to fully integrate its technology into its customers’ lives, especially as their work and personal lives continue to converge. “We talk about ‘one life’ as the overarching strategy for print,” said Olson. “It isn’t just home, office, or industrial. It’s the fact our customers are living one life and it’s 24/7. A day in the life of customer means sometimes they’re on a plane, at home, in an office, in a coffee shop. We’re looking at how we’re making a blueprint for them.”

Throughout its history, The Cannata Report‘s iconic event has grown substantially in scope each year.  To date the Cannata Dinner has collectively raised over $1.5 million for a variety of charities nationwide.

Winners of the 2015 Franks, named in honor of The Cannata Report‘s founder Frank G. Cannata, were determined by an EverBank-sponsored survey of the independent dealer community, conducted by The Cannata Report.  In addition to the individual honors bestowed to Taylor and Blackmer, Franks were awarded in the following categories:

  • Best A4 Manufacturer (MFP and Printer categories): Lexmark International, Inc., accepted by Phil Boatman, Business Alliance Manager.
  • Best Manufacturer: Ricoh Americas Corp., accepted by John Brophy, VP, Product Marketing.
  • Best-in-Class Manufacturer: Toshiba America Business Solutions, accepted by Larry White, SVP, Sales.

New categories this year included:

  • Best Software Developer: Square 9 Softworks, accepted by Lauren Ford, Marketing Communications Manager.

A Who’s Who of Industry executives—including representatives from the manufacturing, software, services, financial and dealer segments of the business technology industry—attended the dinner, which was hosted by Frank G. Cannata, The Cannata Report‘s founder, president and editor-in-chief/publisher and CJ Cannata, partner, SVP, brand strategy and development. Nick Valvano, president emeritus and brother of Jim Valvano, the inspiration for The V Foundation, and Alan Krutchkoff, co-founder and president of Adopt-a-Soldier Platoon were in attendance to accept the evening’s charitable proceeds. Bob Goldberg, general counsel of the Business Technology Association, served as emcee.

“I am humbled to be singled out with this award and grateful to The Cannata Report for highlighting the achievements of all the talented women and the new generation of young professionals who are making an impact in our industry.  Exposure like this is huge and helps bring more talent to this business,” said Sharp’s Laura Blackmer.

“I share this award with our entire company.  Konica Minolta is honored to be acknowledged by The Cannata Report’s annual awards and proud to raise funds with so many others in our industry for such worthwhile charities,” said Konica Minolta’s Rick Taylor.  “It’s a big deal to give back and we are committed in our support of this event.”

“Our event was marked by a number of exciting firsts.  Laura Blackmer’s recognition as winner of the first Best Woman Executive award was met with thunderous applause.  Square 9 Softworks was honored with our first Best Software Developer award, and Konica Minolta garnered our first award for Best Marketing.  As for Rick Taylor of Konica Minolta, he’s the first-ever executive to win five years in a row and the first ever to document his recognition with a video presentation that gave everyone in attendance a chance to share Rick’s infectious sense of humor,” said Frank Cannata. “Our winners and the evening’s charitable donations represent the very best of the industry.”

“Even though the room is filled with competitors, there is a genuine sense of camaraderie and shared sense of purpose among all who attend our annual event,” said CJ Cannata. “Each year, the generous donations exceed our expectations.  We are grateful for the unwavering support from attendees, sponsors and partners across the business technology industry who made our 30thanniversary such a memorable occasion.”

HARDYSTON, NJ (October 8, 2013) Frank Cannata, president of Marketing Research Consultants LLC (MRC), and editor-in-chief and publisher of the THE CANNATA REPORT and Live Wire, announced today that THE CANNATA REPORT’s 28th Annual Awards and Charities Dinner will take place on Wednesday, October 16, at The Park Savoy in Florham Park, NJ starting at 5:30 p.m.

The annual event recognizes the best products from manufacturers in the office equipment and work flow solutions industry. The awards are determined by the results of the THE CANNATA REPORT’s Annual Dealer Survey — now in its 28th as year as well.

Dealers from across the country take part in our Annual Dealer Survey and it does more that just rank the best products and software from manufacturers,” said Frank Cannata. “This probe uncovers the dealers’ major concerns and reveals how well they are progressing towards becoming a true services provider,” Cannata added.

In addition to the survey awards, THE CANNATA REPORT will honor Kirk Yoshida, the retired chairman of Ricoh Americas Corporation with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Mr. Yoshida spent his entire career at Ricoh, starting in 1967, with Ricoh Company, Ltd., in Japan. In 1998, Mr. Yoshida was appointed Chairman and CEO of Ricoh Corporation (USA). In 2002, he became a corporate Managing Director and was appointed General Manager of the International Marketing Group in Japan in 2003. Mr. Yoshida returned to the United States in 2008, once again as Chairman of Ricoh Americas Corporation. He returned to Japan in 2009, becoming Chairman of Ricoh Leasing before his retirement in 2012.

All proceeds from THE CANNATA REPORT’s 28th Annual Awards and Charities Dinner will benefit the MaryAnn Ingoglia Memorial Research Grant for Leukemia conducted at The Hackensack University Medical Center.” Over the years, the annual dinner has raised over $1million for various charities,” Mr. Cannata said.

HARDYSTON, NJ (October 15, 2013) Frank Cannata, president of Marketing Research Consultants LLC (MRC), and editor-in-chief and publisher of the THE CANNATA REPORT and Live Wire, announced the relaunch of TheCannataReport.com website and Live Wire blog today. The newly revised website and blog will be presented to hundreds of office equipment executives at THE CANNATA REPORT’s 28th Annual Awards and Charities Dinner, Wednesday, October 16, at The Park Savoy in Florham Park, NJ.

Since its launch in 1982, THE CANNATA REPORT, a monthly trade magazine, has been recognized as a leading media resource for the office products and workflow solutions industry. In 1985, MRC launched Live Wire, a monthly supplement to THE CANNATA REPORT that the company distributed between THE CANNATA REPORT’s publication cycles. Live Wire was distributed via fax to provide up-to-the-minute information on the industry.

With today’s ever-changing technology, it was time for both THE CANNATA REPORT and Live Wire to evolve while continuing to provide the information that the office products and workflow solutions industry wants and needs,” said Frank Cannata. “I was fortunate that my son, CJ Cannata, joined the company in 2012 to spearhead this endeavor.”

Building on his 15 years of experiencein marketing, content solutions and branding at media and entertainment corporations such as Time Warner, Inc. and Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc., CJ assembled a talented group of media specialists to bring his vision for THE CANNATA REPORT website and Live Wire blog to life and effect the necessary changes.

With the work CJ has already accomplished for THE CANNATA REPORT and Live Wire, I felt it was appropriate to make him a partner in MRC and appoint him senior vice president of Brand Strategy and Development,” Frank Cannata said.

According to CJ Cannata, “In a climate where business executives are constantly inundated with media messages and content — but don’t have the time to search for the information they really need to build their business — it was necessary to rebrand and relaunch THE CANNATA REPORT media portfolio. The goal was to make our content more readily available and to provide more frequent industry updates.” CJ also added, “Ultimately, the new site will make it more convenient for our audience to access, search for, comment on and share content from THE CANNATA REPORT and Live Wire blog from connected devices anywhere, anytime.”

Social Media to Play Active Role in Communication between Dealers and Manufacturers

As part of THE CANNATA REPORT media portfolio rebranding effort, THE CANNATA REPORT also officially launched an extensive social media presence on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook and YouTube. “In addition to the ‘Leave a Comment’ feature across TheCannataReport.com’s content pages, these platforms will help industry professionals exchange views and opinions in real time,” CJ Cannata said.

While I will continue to build and market our brand and overall content strategy, Frank Cannata will continue to be the driving force behind our media portfolio,” CJ said.

Industry Executives Look Forward to Changes

Two of the office equipment industry’s most widely respected independent dealers Chip Crunk, president & CEO of RJ Young Company in Nashville, TN, and subscriber to THE CANNATA REPORT for nearly 20 years; and Rick Bastinelli, president of Centric Business Systems and subscriber to THE CANNATA REPORT for seven years, commented on the relaunch of THE CANNATA REPORT media portfolio.

THE CANNATA REPORT gives independent dealers a straightforward, unbiased and informed analysis of our industry, which is very valuable in managing our businesses. Expanding the report to digital avenues will allow greater accessibility to the information and also allow us to share and engage in conversations about the information easily, Chip Crunk said.”

Rick Bastinelli said “for more than 30 years Frank Cannata, through THE CANNATA REPORT and the Live Wire, has been the office equipment industries ‘Voice of Reason’ for the dealer community. “Frank’s commitment to the independent dealers has him attending most industry trade shows, manufacturer’s meetings and events so he can obtain all the available information and present a candid assessment of how it affects the dealer community. His relaunch of THE CANNATA REPORT and its website and making the Live Wire a blog, in addition to having a presence in the social media world will only expand his reach to the dealers, manufacturers and consumers,” Mr. Bastinelli added.

MWAi, a leading a leading provider of solutions that support the exchange of real-time information between hardware assets, mobile workers, and key stakeholders in mission-critical positions is a launch sponsor of the new website TheCannataReport.com.

MWAi is one the launch sponsors of TheCannataReport.com for a very good reason. It offers a fantastic opportunity to realize a heightened level of communication,” said Mike Stramaglio President MWAi. “The combination of an online publication and the use of social media is the best possible way for the people in our industry to obtain the information we need to operate our business. This includes manufacturers, distributors, financial institutions and dealers. I look at it as the best possible conduit of information.”

Innovolt, another launch sponsor of TheCannataReport.com website, was the first company to provide complete power protection and asset management software to solve a host of unique problems that most businesses and consumers are not aware of but are paying for through shortened electronics lifespan and decreased product reliability.

Walter Crowder, Vice President of Sales for Innovolt, said “Innovolt has been working with THE CANNATA REPORT for four years. We have continued our relationship with this publication because of its respectable reputation within the office equipment industry, and because Frank Cannata has been a valued partner and trusted advisor. We are excited to be a part of this evolutionary journey for THE CANNATA REPORT as the publication moves further into the digital world. This transformation couldn’t be possible without the addition of CJ Cannata, who has an impressive digital marketing background and will take this publication to a new level.”

In addition to announcing the revised THE CANNATA REPORT, Live Wire and social media presence The Cannata Report’s Annual Awards and Charities Dinner during the past 16 years has raised nearly $1 million for various charities. This year all proceeds from the dinner will benefit the MaryAnn Ingoglia Memorial Research Grant for Leukemia conducted at The Hackensack University Medical Center.
