In late 2025, Toshiba Tec held a “Business Strategy Briefing” led by President Hironobu Nishikori.
- In its retail business, the company will center on the ELERA platform to provide an end-to-end offering of hardware, software, and services, aiming to expand its business domains through data utilization and partnerships. (ELERA is its next-gen, cloud-native unified commerce platform designed for retailers to create flexible, modular, and frictionless in-store shopping experiences.)
- In its workplace business, it will allocate key resources to solutions, supporting SMB customers in improving operational efficiency and adopting cloud services to sustain and grow recurring revenue.
Through a growth strategy that combines strengths in “physical + cyber” backed by strong product capabilities, Toshiba Tec aims to achieve its mid-term growth target of a 10% operating profit margin. The timing for reaching 10% is targeted first in Japan Retail in FY2028, then in Overseas Retail (the Americas) in FY2029, with companywide achievement—including the MFP printing business—targeted for FY2030.
Toshiba Tec set a 10-year vision starting in 2020, when Nishikori assumed office, aiming that by 2030 it will become a “globally top solution partner”—a company that plays a central role in global retail innovation and contributes to solving social challenges. The company has consistently pursued a shift in its business structure from hardware and maintenance toward solutions.
As customer touchpoints, Toshiba Tec serves eight of Japan’s top 10 retailers, seven of the top 10 in the United States, and four of the top 10 in Europe. Approximately 1.4 million MFPs are operating worldwide. Its POS system market share is 17% globally and 52% in Japan, ranking No.1 in both. As of the end of this past September, among 15,275 group employees, about 5,000 are service/maintenance personnel (including some 2,000 in Japan), and the company has 61 global locations. Nishikori stated, “This touchpoint customer base and our service personnel are our lifeline.”
Hardware and cyber at Toshiba Tec
Toshiba Tec aims to become a solutions company built on hardware through “physical + cyber,” while proactively executing growth investments for business expansion. On December 18, 2025, Toshiba Tec and Kaga Electronics announced a basic agreement toward collaborative development and manufacturing in the retail industry. In October 2024, as part of efforts to realize high-quality AI transformation, Toshiba Tec established GYAiNAMICS (Minato-ku, Tokyo). Together with Toshiba Tec and McKinsey, the three parties aim to transform the retail industry by enabling real-time analysis of retail data using NVIDIA GPUs.
Adoption of ELERA continues to expand rapidly, with 13 of the world’s top retailers across more than 30 countries now using it. Annual transactions have increased to 8 billion. By 2029, implementations are planned for a total of 15,000+ stores and 123,000 lanes. With the expansion of co-creation partners, the number of APIs has grown from around 300 two years ago to 990+, and microservices have rapidly expanded from 25 to 69 over the same period.
In the workplace business, Toshiba Tec established ETRIA in July 2024 to jointly develop and produce MFP and printer hardware, enabling Toshiba Tec to allocate more strategic resources to solutions. In FY2025, U.S. tariffs were expected to have a major impact of ¥11.0 billion but, Nishikori said, “Countermeasures—including price pass-through—are finally complete, and we expect conditions to return largely to normal starting around next year. [2026]” The company aims to sustain and expand its share of the 1.4 million installed MFP base to secure after-sales revenue and continue growing recurring income.
In the United States, Toshiba Tec was rated the top A3 MFP manufacturer for the second consecutive year in the 2025 dealer survey by The Cannata Report and also ranked top in A4 MFPs. A key evaluation comment was: “Toshiba is a true partner that prioritizes customer profitability above all else.” Nishikori noted that he was “very pleased” to receive this recognition for two consecutive years.
Toshiba Tec also offers Elevate Sky, a cloud print service capable of centrally managing devices from other manufacturers as well, and it has been highly rated by SMB customers. In October 2025, the company further strengthened this capability by acquiring Youmebee, Ltd., a cloud MPS solutions company rebranded as “Coreza.” In its office solutions sales plan, Toshiba Tec aims to grow revenue at an annual rate of 11% through FY2027.
In addition, Toshiba Tec has researched RFID technology for more than 20 years since 2002, applying it to MFPs and BCS (barcode solutions) to support a wide range of workplace management operations. Within the Toshiba Group, it holds a cumulative 5,400 patents, the most in the industry. Through group synergies leveraging RFID, the company is working to expand its business domains.
With these assets, Toshiba Tec aims to achieve a 10% operating profit margin companywide by FY2030.
