Fridays with Frank – Print Love within Workplace Technology?

by Mark Vruno

With Valentine’s Day tomorrow, Founder Frank G. Cannata talks with Print4Pay Hotel’s Art Post about whether younger people in the workplace technology space have any print love ♥️ in their hearts. Post’s blog, “What Happens to Office Print Devices When the Boomers Retire?” caught our attention. Frank points out that The Cannata Report’s 2025 Dealer Survey results revealed more than one-third of dealership revenues within the channel now are attributed to managed IT services and production printing, and Post confirms print’s ongoing decline in the office-tech setting. “Dealers need to find additional revenue points,” says Art, a longtime copier industry veteran and self-described Baby Boomer.

‘Print love’ is waning

Post thinks the AEC (architecture, engineering, and construction) vertical market may be “the last stand for A3” and the format’s rich margins. The so-called “Millennials” don’t hate printers, he notes, adding that younger generations grew up with a mature internet and social media. These younger workers and prospects are naturally more reliant on digital technologies. They’d rather view/store/save—as opposed to print/scan. Millennials, meanwhile, are working toward the DX goal of scanning legacy documents. So, when Generations Z and Alpha “take over,” what will printing look like in the B2B space? Beyond production printing, Post admits that he isn’t certain there will be much toner or inkjet on paper in the workplace going forward.
